How to win from the start
by David Royston-Lee
Your No 1 Career Guide
There are many books written on how to find a job or a career.
‘Career management’ is a subject we all talk about a lot, but few people actually work at properly. Most of us believe, particularly when there are ‘credit crunches’ and redundancies all around us, that we are just lucky to get any job.
And what do we do? The same old things everyone else does:
•Looking at job ads (Oh…there aren’t many…that’s strange…)
•Going to recruiter (Oh, they’ve just closed down your local branch….)
•Sending off your CV to all the employers in your area (strange no one replies…)
Yes it’s a difficult world if you follow the tried (or should I say tired) and trusted ways that everyone tells you to follow.
A Career management approach is a little different… and it's simple… you need to answer three questions:
•Who am I?
•Where am I going?
•How am I going to get there?
Most books on the job search forget the first question and concentrate on the easier, latter two: ‘where am I going’ and ‘how I am going to get there’. So in this book we are going to concentrate much more on the ‘who I am’, we will cover the other sections but they are shorter, and serve only to back up the ‘who I am’.
The reason for this is because I believe that once you know more about ‘who I am’ the other two areas fall into place quite easily. The confidence that knowing yourself gives you, enables the exploration phase (where am I going) and the consolidation phase (how am I going to get there) to happen naturally. (… and ‘confidence’ is the key to getting the best job!)
